In Uganda, schools are meant to be safe spaces for learning. Yet, sexual violence remains one of the most pressing threats faced by learners. To address this, the Ministry of Education and Sports introduced the Reporting, Tracking, Referral, and Response (RTRR) Guidelines.
In the Busoga sub-region, many schools have not adopted these guidelines, leaving cases unreported and unaddressed.
Â
The Raising Voices Against Sexual Violence in Schools Project is working to change this reality by:
• Generating evidence on sexual violence among adolescents.
• Strengthening implementation of RTRR guidelines.
• Building the capacity of schools and communities to report, manage, and prevent sexual violence.
• Empowering learners, teachers, and communities to take action.
Â
Launched in 2023, the project now reaches 25 schools across 6 districts in Busoga: Jinja, Mayuge, Luuka, Namayingo, Kamuli, and Buyende. In Jinja, we are working in Lubani, Busedde Seed, St. Gonzaga Gonza, and Buyengo Secondary Schools. In Mayuge, we work in Malongo, St. John Buwaya, Waitambogwe, Bunya and Kaluuba Secondary Schools. In Namayingo, the participating schools are Kifuyo, Buswale, Mutumba, St. Phillips Lwangosia, and Buhembe Secondary Schools. In Luuka, we operate in Walibo Seed, Busalamu, Kiyunga, Busiiro, and Nakabale High School. In Buyende, we are working with Buyende Seed and St. James Kagulu Secondary Schools.
